Music of the Day

Pedro Soler & Gaspar Claus

A father and son duo that is too good not to share (in my opinion of course!)

Winter & Day 15

Winter is in full "bloom." And when I say bloom what I really mean by that is grey/dreary/ugly/cold weather. Yep...winter is in full swing and I can tell that I am starting to yearn for some sunshine. Our apartment is still littered with boxes and so the apartment doesn't feel cozy or homey anymore so I can't wait to get all settled into the new apartment and make it feel like home. We just have under a week to finish getting everything packed and ready to go bright and early Saturday morning.
What I am really enjoying right now (thought I needed some positives after starting with the negatives :) ) is that I have a paying job, we are moving to the city (yay!) and that Brian and I can wine taste at our winery anytime we want for free. On the weekends when Brian and I get bored, we usually head to the winery, drink wine and chat with our two favorite gals we see every time. That totally happened yesterday. Dad, if you are reading this they have a new Sangiovese that is excellent!

Day 15 - Brian's hunger got the best of him yesterday so we ordered a wild mushroom flat bread and also this salami and cheese plate. I must note that the cheese is from Beecher's which is to die for. Go if you are ever in the area. That's an order!

The Gift of Hunger

I follow a blog called Paris Review. Basically it's a compilation of various writers who cover practically every topic under the sun. That's what I love about it. They posted a piece today that really struck a chord with me. I LOVE food. A little too much. In fact, back in August when I really started watching my food and exercise seriously there have been many days when I haven't been able to eat whatever I want. Ok...most days. My dear husband on the other hand NEEDS to eat as much fat and calories as he possibly can get in his stomach. While he eats these delectable treats I just stare and wish that somehow those 7 potato chips wouldn't cause a surplus in the fat section. They do unfortunately, so I just will continue to stare and salivate. ANYWAYS, this article made me happy because this gal talks about her passion for food and I definitely relate how she associates cities/locations with food.

Day 13

The past week or so we have started packing up our apartment. It's been slightly aggravating having everything in disarray, not knowing exactly what to pack early because we really don't have THAT much stuff and we use most of it, and just feeling disorganized in general. But...we push on!

Ravioli Adventure

Thursday night I decided to take on a new challenge...I made my own homemade raviolis. Over Thanksgiving, my parents brought up an old pasta maker my grandmother left for my mom to continue the pasta making legacy. Well, it ended up sitting in the garage so I asked them to bring it up for me to take a stab at it. To be honest, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I had expected, it just took a very long time to go through the whole process and finish. I started about 8:30 and didn't finish until about midnight. Now I know why several women would gather and make pasta together...make pasta all night while gabbing and having fun. Who wants to join me next time?! :) Also make note that making pasta goes very well with Maria Callas radio on pandora (if you enjoy opera that is).
The end result wasn't a disappointment. I quite enjoyed the filling I made and the sauce I prepared to go with it was pretty good but I have already made mental notes on what to do next time. I will definitely make the dough a bit thinner as well as a different sauce and I will try the filling my grandma would make. I know this sounds like a total revamp but...I guess that's what happens when you experiment. I must say, I am very happy that they turned out as well as they did. Hooray. Here are some pictures. Sorry they are a little dark and slightly out of focus...my arms were slightly fatigued. haha.

The instructions for the pasta maker are in Italian...I didn't feel like translating so I just figured it out myself

Fresh ingredients make for good filling

Please excuse my silly PJs. I was in for a long night so comfort was a high priority

Note to self: Buy ravioli cutter to make life easier

The finished product!

Day 12

Well, I have fallen completely off the bandwagon as far as my daily pictures are concerned. But I suppose I have a legitimate excuse...I have been apartment hunting these past few days but now that we've found a place I can get back to the ol' routine.

One of my favorite things is facetiming with my family.

Day 10

This evening I met up with some family friends, 2 brothers Eric and Paul and a few others, at a new brewery in Bellevue. It just opened in November. It was a really great time, the beer and food were both good and the company was great. Right after we got our beers the beer master came around the room asking if anyone was interested in seeing where the beer was made and processed. We all decided to go check it out in the room behind the dining room. Usually these kind of tours are very interesting and the tour guide is typically outgoing. Not this time. Two words: Beer Nerd. This guy was about my age I am guessing, he had very curly hair right below his ears and wore cargo pants with doc martins. He was everything I would imagine a young beer master to be. After about one minute of him talking he lost me. His tour was very monotone and very matter of fact. Unfortunately for me the speech lasted about ten minutes. At about the 8 minute mark some machinery starting going off and at that point I couldn't even hear the guy anymore, all I could do was try to read his lips but I just stared and drifted off in my own thoughts. My point being...if you are ever there don't take the "tour." :) For dinner I had the Cubano sandwich which was pork, cheese and pickle with an aioli sauce. It was delicious! To drink I had their amber ale and for dessert we all shared a homemade ice cream made with their oatmeal stout, brownie chunks and bacon pieces on top. YUM.

My drive home...it was pretty foggy. I was trying to capture the mystical looking freeway but it didn't quite come out. All well.

Day 9

This is one of my favorite pots that my mom gave to me. It belonged to a family friend so it's nice to have something that's been handed down and has some extra special meaning. Last night I used it to make a homemade vegetable soup with a side of corn bread. Just what I was craving.

Day 8

One of my favorite foods to eat in the whole world is salsa. Any kind of salsa. Therefore, my picture of the day does not need any further introduction.  (I literally ate an entire bottle last week. I kinda wish I was kidding)

Day 7

Today I took apart my vacuum and hand vacuum and cleaned both of them out. It was absolutely disgusting. After cleaning them out and getting a closer look it read :Clean every 3 months. Oops. No wonder why they were so filthy! After being thoroughly grossed out it felt so good to get them clean again.

Day 6

The item in this picture is part of my every day life. It gets me going in the morning and the smell alone puts me in a better mood every day. Today especially it was greatly appreciated. A bonus....Brian came home from work with this mug that someone didn't want. It's now one of my favorites.

Well, I'm up pretty early on this cold foggy Sunday morning. I bet you'll never guess why. Well maybe you can based on prior entries.......the blasted fire alarm!!! Please excuse me for a minute while I go on a slight rant. I can't even remember the last time I was this upset. After the second time the alarms went off I was pretty pissed that we were woken in the middle of the night not because of any emergency. But after this fourth time I have really had enough. What makes me the most upset is the fact that it's a water issue in our building that they apparently refuse to fix and we have not had one apology nor an explanation of why this has been happening at all. Not a peep from anyone. The reason I know it's a water issue is from another tenant while waiting outside in the cold for the fire department to come. I can't imagine how annoyed the firemen are by our building as well. So I have written an anonymous letter requesting some kind of compensation or at the very least an apology that I will leave under their door and left three reviews on three different websites. I'd say that is sufficient enough and to be honest I feel better now that I've gotten it out of my system. If I had any second thoughts about moving out of this building, they have all been squashed and I can't wait to move into a different place. And just for humor's sake, I signed my anonymous letter :
Unfaithfully yours,
Tenant

Day 5

Tonight Brian and I are going out with another couple for drinks and one of my favorite things to do before going out is painting my nails. Today I am going with a classic red.

Day 4

If you know me well, then you know how much I absolutely love diet coke. Brian has been trying to get me to quit for a while now because I would typically drink at least one can per day. So we went grocery shopping last weekend and attempted to find a couple alternatives that don't use aspartame or sucralose. I found two diet colas that use stevia which is supposedly better than the others. Turns out they are pretty good! A fair compromise.

Bizarre Book Collection

I came across this gem...a very strange book collection. Strange indeed! But I definitely laughed at every single one because they are so funny and strangely intriguing. Two of my favorites:

Right?! Take a look here and prepare to be entertained.

Day 3

My picture of the day has been kind of a secret that I've only shared with a few people. But now I'm going public...I frequent the tanning bed. There. My secret is out. I try and go once a week for about 10 minutes, on rare occasion twice a week. It makes me feel better during the dreary winter and I just love feeling the warmth and pretend sun. There ya have it.

Photography

If any of you like looking at photographs of people, I came across this artist that takes great pictures (in my opinion of course).

Day 2

I love this view and definitely appreciate it more on a clear day

Day 1

My first picture of 365. Boy I've got a ways to go!
This little kitty makes me life so much more enjoyable and I cherish every day that I have her.

Happy New Year!

Today has been a pretty typical day. Brian had to work so I have been puttering around the house getting things done and taking Miss Olive to the vet for her fluids. Last night Brian came home early so I made a nice dinner....Sole fish with a lemon butter & herb sauce and mashed potatoes. It turned out great thankfully! Fish is not my forte so I am trying to practice it more. And the night wouldn't have been complete without the champagne!
Unfortunately the garbage disposal decided to poop out last night so our sink has been out of order since and the dishes keep slowly piling up. All well. I can't do anything about it until tomorrow when the maintenance person comes. I was tempted to do dishes in the bathtub but....nah. It just feels wrong. haha!
Last night a midst the Dick Clark special on tv and having fun, Brian and I made our New Years goal lists. I have always had goals in mind every year and let's be honest, I never achieve them, but I have actually written them down this time so it feels slightly more official and I reeeeeally hope I can follow through this time. This is the year! One of my goals is to take a picture every day of something that makes me happy. Why not?

Gorgeous sunrise yesterday!

Brian desperately trying to unplug the sink.

Thank you Trader Joes for the excellent champagne

Cheers!
