Over the Weekend
This weekend my mom and brother came to visit from California. We had a lovely time and spent the whole weekend with family friends that were up here as well. Thankfully it didn't rain and was a tad bit warmer than it has been lately. On Friday night we went out in lower queen anne for dinner and drinks and ended up at a dueling piano bar that was rather entertaining and somehow my brother and I managed to get my mom up on stage because it was her birthday. Truthfully her birthday is next month, but why not celebrate a little early? ;) She was a great sport and sat up there and rocked out. Go mom!

Cooking/Baking Adventures
I am so excited because I just bought my first cook book...well, the first one that I've ever been truly excited about that is. I saw a little video of her making one of her recipes and she is just the cutest! She is a British girl who moved to Paris and now is on a show for BBC2 and has her own books. She stages the show in her own apartment in her teeny tiny kitchen in Paris...can I move in???

Tournée de Seattle
Yesterday was a gorgeous day out so of course I had to get out and soak up some vitamin d. My friend Rachel volunteered to pick me up and show me around the city - the parts I had not yet seen which to be honest was quite a bit! We drove straight to Queen Anne (lower and upper) and made our first stop at a Danish pastry cafe. I had a cinnamon custard pastry and it was quite good. I admit I am a pretty easy customer when it comes to any kind of pastry but it was nothing to write home about. Queen Anne is very nice and is divided into an upper and lower section. The lower is more of a younger crowd and has their own little main street area while the upper is a little more ritzy, slightly older crowd and has their own main street as well. I would easily live in either without blinking an eye! :) Our next stop was Ballard which is the old Scandinavian/fishing/industrial area. Rachel lived in the Ballard neighborhood for 3 years so she showed me all the good places to go. We stopped at another pastry location that was super popular and had a line out the door. I've gotta say, this place was definitely note worthy. I had an onion & gruyere treat. It was to die for. Afterwards we walked around where all the shops/bars/restaurants were. I will definitely be back to hang out there. Our last stop of the day was the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks and Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden. It was so nice to stroll around the water and gardens...everyone else had the same idea because it was quite crowded. I love that when the sun comes out there is immediately more energy and everyone seems super happy. It makes for a much more enjoyable afternoon.

Treats
Lately I have been into eating 0% greek yogurt with agave syrup on top to sweeten it up a tad rather than honey. It's delicious! So yesterday I was rooting through my cupboard just to see what I had in there and I came across shredded coconut. All of a sudden a light bulb went off in my head and I went back to my old job at Trufflehounds and remembered how wonderful the smell of toasted coconut was and how it always filled the shop with this amazing aroma. So...I toasted my own. This morning for breakfast I had my greek yogurt and then I sliced a banana and put the coconut on top. It was heaven on a plate.

After living in Washington for a whole year (I can't even believe a year has gone by already) I still find myself surprised by Washingtonians at least once a week. Yesterday was two for the price of one! For the first time since we've moved to the city I actually drug my lazy bones to the gym. It felt great, yada yada. Let's get to the good part. Before heading back on the highway I needed gas so I stopped at a very busy station right before the bridge. I pull in and the only free spot was on the wrong side. Back home, all the hoses stretch so we are able to reach the other side if necessary. Well, stupid native Californian me, pulled in and tried to yank the hose to reach. Not the case. It didn't budge one bit. Of course there's somebody waiting behind me that I notice in my peripheral which is already annoying. So..I have no choice but to get back in the car and find a spot on the right side. As I am backing out, some girl in her really nice audi pulls in rather quickly and totally blocks me. If I wasn't paying attention and assuming people would know to wait one freaking second for me to get out I could have rammed right into her. HOWEVER, I am already aware of the fact that Washington houses the worst drivers in the U.S...I'm sure of it. So I had to stop so miss audi could get her car in. Ok, she's pulled into her spot so I step on the gas again to continue to back out. I slam on the breaks. Here she comes again right towards me and she needs to re-park to get closer apparently. Really?! I always ask myself the same question daily...how in the hell did these people get their license? I know it seems silly to post about this situation but I am seriously baffled by these drivers and my patience is wearing thin. Thin I tell ya.
After I get out of that dang gas station I make my way back to Seattle and go to Trader Joes. It's raining, of course, and the store is in Capitol Hill by the university. Much to my surprise there are what seems like hoards of runners out! Wearing shorts! I don't know why I was surprised because people just go on with their lives despite of the rain and get outside. I can't say whether or not I will ever get to that point but it reminded me that just because it's raining doesn't mean I have to hibernate in my apartment. These are my boring stories and I'm sticking to them. Ciao!

I'm Dreaming of Warmer Weather

Recipe of the Day
Last week I came across a recipe that called for tilapia in a coconut cilantro sauce. It was super tasty!! I only used about 1/3 of the coconut milk from the can so tonight I am going to make the same sauce except use chicken rather than tilapia. Hopefully it's just as good! Here's the recipe in case you feel like giving it a whirl.
- canola oil spray
- tilapia fillets
- salt and pepper
- 1/2 cup coconut milk (i used the light version)
- 1/2 cup cilantro
- 1 tsp ginger
- 2 cloves garlic (i used a tad more)
- 1/2 jalapeno pepper - seeded and chopped
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Spray pan with oil spray.
Combine coconut milk, cilantro, ginger, garlic, jalapeno in a blender or food processor and pulse until smooth. Pour mix over fish. Bake until opaque (about 15 min). Garnish with cilantro and serve with rice. I served with green beans but I will probably use brown rice tonight.
Simple Sunday
Yesterday, Sunday, was an easy going (and sunny! yay!) day. Brian and I ventured out to Costco because we have a gift card. I use the present tense "have" because we forgot to use it! The whole reason we went was to use the card and we completely forgot. All well...next time. Once we got home and put away the goodies that were purchased we wanted to check out Fremont so we took a little drive North. It was a lovely time and I was able to catch a couple photos that I thought were good at the time...turns out they are pretty grainy. Dang.

Date Night
Last night Brian and I went out on the town for a nice date. Originally Brian and I were going to venture out to Capitol Hill but we missed that bus and didn't want to wait 30 min for the next one so we just headed downtown instead since that bus comes more frequently. We decided to be complete tourists and go on the new ferris wheel since it was a pretty clear night. It was pricey but it was worth it to do just once. And now's the time before all the tourists start pouring in. After our ride we were pretty hungry so we walked back up to 1st street and tried a sushi place called Japonessa. The food was pretty good, the atmosphere was great and we had a grand time.
